About Betty.

Betty is an independent brand studio dedicated to amplifying voices that are often overlooked.

Led by Elizabeth Elcoate, the studio designs brands for organisations doing meaningful, often challenging work - the kind that requires nuance, empathy, and the ability to work thoughtfully with complexity. My practice is shaped by a belief that design is never neutral — that it can build trust, challenge power, and shape how people are seen and treated.

I personally lead all projects, collaborating with a trusted group of specialists when additional expertise is needed.

Design with responsibility

I work best with organisations that are small, agile, and fully committed to their purpose — teams that are close to the work, internally aligned, and open to collaboration.

I believe design has a responsibility. It shapes how people are represented, who is included, and who is heard. At its best, it connects emotionally, communicates authentically, and supports action — without compromising dignity.

Too often, voices that should be centred are excluded, resulting in work that feels patronising, extractive, or harmful. I bring an in-depth understanding of the complexity purpose-led organisations face, and the expertise to navigate that responsibility.

How I work

My role is as collaborator and cheerleader — bringing structure, momentum, and expertise, while supporting the people I’m working with. My aim is to make the process feel calm, enjoyable, and painless.

Every project starts with a getting-to-know-you workshop to help me fully understand pain points and challenges. When things feel messy for clients, this session helps untangle them. Honest conversations are key at this stage.

Throughout a project, I build in clear decision points to keep momentum flowing. These are agreed and signed off on as we go, so work moves forward, and everyone stays aligned.

I’ve extensive experience working with neurodivergent founders and teams. I find out how a person works best, adapt communication styles, and break projects into manageable steps. When overwhelm creeps in, I focus on simplifying and creating plans that feel achievable.

I always find that projects work best with open communication, one or two clear decision-makers, and consistent feedback.

Beyond Client Work

In 2019, I co-founded Agrespect, an organisation created to support LGBTQIA+ people living and working in rural and agricultural settings — communities where isolation is common, and visibility has historically carried risk.

Through this work, I helped build corporate and governmental partnerships and collaborated closely with individuals and groups who had previously lacked a platform, supporting them to share their experiences, find community, and be heard on their own terms.

Agrespect reinforced the importance of care, boundaries, and responsibility — lessons that continue to shape how I approach client work, particularly in complex or sensitive contexts.
